If you're a passionate angler with a taste for adventure, TwinPeakes Fly Fishing has an unforgettable trip lined up that you won’t want to miss. Due to demand, TwinPeakes is adding an extra hosted trip this September to Iceland’s Stóra Laxá. It’s the perfect way to wrap up the season: an extraordinary fishing experience with the chance to witness the northern lights, a glass of wine in hand.
Why September on the Stóra Laxá?
The autumn months are famous on the Stóra Laxá for impressive salmon runs from the Hvítá River, particularly for the highly prized multi sea winter (MSW) salmon. With fewer hours of daylight and cooler temperatures, September is an ideal time to fish this stunning Icelandic river. You’ll have great chances to hook into powerful, acrobatic salmon while immersed in breathtaking scenery.
Discover the Beauty of Stóra Laxá
The Stóra Laxá is an awe-inspiring, 90-km river originating from Lake Grænavatn and flowing into the glacial Hvítá. With its clear water, dynamic landscapes, and diverse fish population, it has become a favorite among anglers worldwide. Located just 90 minutes from Keflavík Airport, the river is divided into an Upper and Lower section, offering 110 prime pools across 4 beats.
For our September trip, we’ll focus on the Lower Stóra Laxá, fishing three rotating beats (Beats 1, 2, and 3) with six rods. Here, anglers are met with a range of fishing conditions: rocky, fast-flowing pools in canyons, and gentle, meandering stretches with gin-clear waters. These are ideal conditions for both seasoned and newer anglers, with a relatively easy wade and well-marked pools.

Fishing Techniques on Stóra Laxá
The Lower Stóra Laxá is a paradise for surface fishing, one of the most popular and thrilling methods among local anglers. Throughout the season, you can expect to see large salmon rising to take micro flies, hitches, and Sunrays from the surface—a rare and exciting sight. With over 60 marked pools, each varying in character and flow, anglers can refine their techniques across a diverse stretch of water.
Accommodation: Lower Stóra Laxá Lodge
You’ll stay at the newly refurbished Lower Stóra Laxá Lodge, nestled on the riverbank with a prime view of the Icelandic wilderness. The lodge boasts six twin bedrooms, one double bedroom, a large dining room, a cozy lounge, and a drying room for your gear.
Amenities include a sauna and jacuzzi—perfect for unwinding after a long day on the water. In the evenings, guests will enjoy relaxed, high-quality meals, complemented by the potential of witnessing the northern lights in the lodge’s scenic setting.
