Into the Wild: Steelhead on the legendary Sustut River at Suskeena Lodge

Into the Wild: Steelhead on the legendary Sustut River at Suskeena Lodge

Some adventures begin the moment your boots hit the ground, and our journey to British Columbia’s Sustut River was exactly that. As the TwinPeakes Fly Fishing team stepped off the plane and into the crisp northern BC air, we knew we were in for something special, the kind of trip you feel in your bones before a single cast is made.

Suskeena Lodge sat tucked deep in the wilderness, remote and welcoming all at once. Warm cabins, superb food, and a team that greeted us like old friends set the tone for what would become an unforgettable week. Each morning, with frost on the boats and perfect water levels rolling through the valley, we headed out with world-class guides who knew every bend, seam, and secret lie of the legendary Sustut.

And the fish… they lived up to every story we’d ever heard. Powerful, wild Steelhead, from hard-charging 7-pounders to fish in the 20-plus class, tearing through the current with a strength that felt almost unreal. When they say Sustut Steelhead pull, they really mean it.

Days blurred into a rhythm of exploration, laughter, and those electric moments of connection that make all the travel worthwhile. Evenings brought fireside stories, incredible meals, and the feeling that we were experiencing something truly rare: untouched wilderness, exceptional hospitality, and a river alive with magic.

By the time we packed our gear, none of us wanted to leave. This was a trip of a lifetime, and we’re already counting the days until we return.
