Why We Do What We Do
We understand that salmon fishing isn’t the easiest sport to get into. Not everyone has the privilege of growing up with a family member or friend who shares their love for the sport. For us, it was our grandad’s obsession that ignited our passion, and he passed it down to us. That’s why TwinPeakes Flyfishing exists—to share this wonderful sport and make it as accessible as possible for everyone to learn and enjoy.
A Tailored Experience for Every Guest
At TwinPeakes, we pride ourselves on crafting each fishing experience to meet the unique needs of our guests. Whether you're a total beginner or a seasoned angler, we ensure that your day on the water is both educational and enjoyable.
For Beginners
If you're new to salmon fishing, don’t worry—we’ve got you covered. We start with a Spey casting masterclass, using tried-and-tested casting exercises to get you casting efficiently in no time. To build confidence, we begin away from the prime fishing pools, using wool instead of a fly. This allows you to focus on technique before we transition to real fishing. We also cover:
-
Basic knots and rigging
-
Fly selection and presentation
-
Swinging the fly effectively
- Checkout our YouTube channel for instructional videos before you arrive:
We believe that if you’re a beginner, you have no bad habits yet—so we’ll teach you the correct way from the start! Our goal isn’t just to help you catch fish but to ensure you leave with valuable knowledge. And if you do land your first-ever Atlantic salmon, you’ll be in good company—we’ve proudly guided over 100 guests to their first salmon!
For Experienced Anglers
For those who already have experience, we offer the opportunity to refine techniques and explore new methods. Whether it’s:
-
Mastering the hitch fly technique in summer
-
Improving distance and control with switch rods
-
Early spring “Springer” hunting with Skagit lines and T-tips
-
Learning how to read the water for better fish location
We tailor each trip to your specific interests and goals, ensuring that even seasoned anglers leave with newfound skills and knowledge.
Where We Fish
Our headquarters are at the Milton of Crathes, just outside Banchory and only 25 minutes from Aberdeen City and Airport. Nestled right on the River Dee, our tackle shop and fly casting school serve as our base.
We focus our experiences around the renowned River Dee, where we have our own private salmon fishing beat at Crathes Castle. This exclusive 2.5-mile stretch of the left bank features stunning pools, a private fishing hut complete with a kitchen, toilets, a log-burning stove, and a balcony overlooking the river.
However, as passionate guides, we always follow the fish. Depending on the time of year, we book our guests onto the best part of the river where we ourselves would fish. Each beat is different—some offer long walks and technical wading, while others provide easy access for beginners still mastering their casts. Whatever your skill level, we will tailor the experience to ensure the best possible day on the water.
