The LOOP Classic X – A Timeless Classic Reimagined

There are some pieces of fly fishing tackle that become more than just tools, and the LOOP Classic is undoubtedly one of them. Instantly recognisable, beautifully engineered and responsible for that unmistakable scream when a salmon heads for the horizon, it has long been one of our favourite fly reels.

For 2026, LOOP have brought the timeless Classic into the 21st century with the launch of the new Classic X.

At first glance, LOOP have wisely retained the character and styling that made the original Classic so desirable. Underneath, however, there have been some significant changes.

2.5:1 Multiplier – Serious Line Recovery

The headline upgrade is the new 2.5:1 multiplier retrieve. Rather than the traditional 1:1 direct drive of a conventional fly reel, one turn of the Classic X handle produces 2.5 rotations of the spool.

For salmon anglers, that's a big improvement. When a fish suddenly turns and charges back towards you, the ability to recover loose line quickly can make the difference between staying connected and losing the fish.

Silent When You Want It. Screaming When You Don't.

LOOP have also listened to their customers and introduced a feature we particularly like - selectable click or silent operation.

A simple turn of the clicker knob allows you to fish the Classic X in near-silent stealth mode. But when you've hooked that fish you've travelled halfway around the world for, turn it back on and you can enjoy one of the great sounds in salmon fishing – a LOOP Classic screaming as a fish disappears downstream!

The Classic X also incorporates LOOP's Power Matrix Drag System, alongside a fully waterproof and corrosion-resistant construction designed for serious use in demanding freshwater and saltwater environments.

The Classic Evolves

For us, the appeal of the Classic X is simple. LOOP haven't tried to reinvent one of fly fishing's most iconic reels. Instead, they've kept the looks, character and excitement that made us fall in love with the Classic in the first place, and added the modern performance anglers have been asking for.
