For those of us raised on traditional speycasting in Scotland, the arrival of skagit lines on these shores was greeted with a mix of fear and horror! The legacy of fine and far off dominated every right minded salmon fly fisher from the River Spey, to the River Tay, to the Tweed. The skagit: short, heavy, and generally distasteful was about as far away from our traditions as we could get. That was until we actually began to use them.
Skagits have made fly fishing at depth easy- or at a minimum, much less difficult. And if you are fishing into the teeth of a gale, as we often do in the early months, it is a godsend. We use them a lot in the spring and backend here on the River Dee and of course, on our quest for huge King salmon in Chile.
Here is Will with a breakdown of all the things you need to know but were too afraid to ask!
